Who qualifies for re-enlistment
The full requirements are in the detailed advertisement on the SAPS website, but SAPS re-enlistment drives consistently require that former members:
- Were appointed as SAPS members in terms of the Police Service Act, 1995, on the rank of Constable, Sergeant or Warrant Officer
- Successfully completed basic police training and relevant functional training courses
- Had a good disciplinary and attendance record during their previous SAPS service
- Hold at least a Grade 12 (Senior Certificate) or higher qualification
- Have at least a valid light motor vehicle licence (Code B)
- Are South African citizens with documentary proof
- Are proficient in at least two official languages, one of which must be English
- Are willing to undergo a medical examination and psychological assessment
- Have no criminal convictions or pending criminal/disciplinary cases, and consent to fingerprints and background checks
- Have not been declared unfit to possess a firearm
- Have no visible tattoos irreconcilable with the uniform and objectives of the Service
- Are prepared to be deployed according to the needs of the SAPS, which may mean relocating at their own expense
- Are willing to undergo a refresher course or further training — candidates without formal detective experience are typically put through detective training immediately after appointment
Previous re-enlistment projects also set an age limit (not older than 55 on the closing date) — confirm this in the 2026 detailed advert.
Who will NOT be considered
Based on SAPS’s standing re-enlistment rules, applications are not considered from former members who:
- Reached retirement age (early or compulsory) when they left
- Were dishonourably discharged or dismissed
- Left while disciplinary or criminal proceedings were pending
- Left due to a severance package, ill health or medical boarding
- Left the Service longer ago than the maximum period specified in the advert
If any of these apply to you, check the detailed 2026 advert before applying.

What happens after you apply
Re-enlistment candidates go through a thorough screening process, which typically includes psychological assessment, fingerprinting, reference checks, medical testing and verification of previous SAPS employment records. Successful candidates without detective experience are put through detective training shortly after appointment, then placed in Detective Services.
Why this matters
Detective Services carry the country’s case dockets, and SAPS has used re-enlistment drives in recent years to bring experienced former officers back specifically for investigation work. For former Constables, Sergeants and Warrant Officers who left in good standing, this is a direct route back into the Service at your previous rank — with your experience going where it is needed most.
Never pay to apply
SAPS never charges fees for applications, forms, screening or training. Application forms are free on the SAPS website. Anyone selling SAPS application forms or promising placement for money is committing fraud — report them.
Summary
SAPS is re-enlisting 200 former Constables, Sergeants and Warrant Officers into Detective Services, with commencing salaries from R248,175 to R385,740 per annum. Download the official form and detailed advert from the SAPS careers page, complete it with your certified documents, and hand-deliver everything to the address in the advert before 15 September 2026.
Good luck with your application.
